For Nature Society (Singapore) members only

Due to its proximity to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the Dairy Farm trail offers an opportunity to encounter forest birds such as the Thick-billed Green Pigeon and Blue-winged Leafbird. On our way to the nearby Singapore Quarry, we may find birds of the open woodlands and gardens including the Dollarbird and Lineated Barbet. We will also watch out for winter visitors.

The long-tailed macaques are the most conspicuous animals at Bukit Timah. Although commonly seen, they are very misunderstood. Few seeing them realise anything about the social world these monkeys live in. They have kin networks, power struggles, friends, foes, and an otherwise complex social network. In many ways, they provide a mirror of our own sociality.

25 Nov (Sat): Race Against Time - Science behind a Botanic Garden Tour

This session introduces the research facilities at the Singapore Botanic Gardens such as the Library of Botany and Horticulture, Orchid and Micro-propagation laboratory and the Herbarium.
Highlights of this 45-minute tour includes a visit to the Herbarium which stores physical records of reference plant materials, some dating as far back as 1790. In addition, learn about our hybridization programme for orchids, a process introduced back in 1930’s by the then Director, R.E Holttum.

The Naked Hermit Crabs introduce you to Chek Jawa without getting your feet wet. Even though we are not going on to the shore, there is still much to see and enjoy. There are monitor lizards, fiddler crabs, spiders, rare plants, wild boar, mudskippers and lots of fruit trees. If we are lucky, we might even spot the Oriental Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Sea Eagle and the giant Atlas Moth.

24 Nov (Fri): Nite Critter Watch at Pasir Ris Mangrove Boardwalk

Join Cicada Tree Eco Place at this location, which is very good for a night wild critter walk and that’s why we keep going back there. As dusk falls, we look out for emerging bats and observe their acrobatic feeding flight. Kids will get to use our bat detector to catch their calls. We explore deep into the mangrove forest via the extensive boardwalks to look for other nocturnal critters who live here, such as water snakes and owls. Tree-climbing crabs may be seen perched high above on branches, as if they're birds. Fireflies also live in this lovely mangrove forest patch. Though only seasonally numerous, we should meet some.
Other exciting nocturnal critters met here include the Reticulated Python, Palm Civet and Mangrove Flatworm. For those who wish to see a Giant Mudskipper, we should be able to spot some asleep in this swamp. This easy walk is on level pathways and wooden boardwalks with no stairs. We will take a night-snack break at one of the shelters.

This walk is offered in collaboration with NParks. Join Lee Ee Ling in exploring Kranji Marshes’ boardwalks, paths and hides, providing excellent views across the freshwater marshes. Birding highlights here include the Red-wattled Lapwing, Purple Swamphen, Common Moorhen, Yellow Bittern, White-browed Crake, Changeable Hawk Eagle and Grey-headed Fish Eagle.

The common palm civet is one of our last wild native urban carnivorans, yet little is known about these nocturnal fruit bandits. How has this species managed to survive urbanisation? What is their role in the ecosystem? Tze Kwan will share with you the secrets of the common palm civet such as their habitats, activity, behaviour and diet.
Take a short walk around Sentosa Nature Discovery with us and find clues to the interesting creatures on the island!

About the speaker: Fung Tze Kwan has been involved in common palm civet research, conservation and outreach since 2010. She graduated with a Master of Science (Biology) from the National University of Singapore studying the diet, home range and seed dispersal abilities of the common palm civets in Singapore.

18 Nov (Sat): Migratory Bird Watch at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Join Cicada Tree Eco Place at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, one of Singapore’s most treasured nature sites. It opened in 1993 and is visited by thousands every year, from families to schools and tourists. It’s the peak migratory bird month here and we are going there to witness and be awestruck by the thousands of shorebirds winging in synchronized formation into the Reserve. They are the wading birds who live and breed in the arctic tundra, coming here to the tropics to escape the northern winter.
Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
Their annual journey is an incredible and dangerous one, and many will not make it back home. Sungei Buloh is a crucial resting, roosting and re-fueling stop for them. Come see these amazing wild birds…whimbrel, sandpiper, turnstone, redshank, greenshank, plovers and more.

Migratory bird season is here again. Every year, thousands of birds escape the cold north to spend the winter months in the warmer southern parts of the earth. Singapore, especially Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, is a favourite stop-over for these birds.

Want to know these birds but don't know how to get started? We are conducting a workshop for the novice. We will spend some time learning bird watching basics like
(1) Learning how to identify birds
(2) Learning how to use a pair of binoculars and the spotting scope to better see the details of birds
(3) Putting these skills into practice

No prior skill/knowledge is required. Come prepared in long sleeved tops and long pants (muted colours preferred). Bring along drinking water, pen and paper.

This tour takes approximately 2 hours. It starts at the Assembly Area before proceeding to the former Bin Kiang School site. You will then head over to the Sensory Trail pond to learn about the habitat restoration efforts before making stops at Pulau Ubin’s former headman’s house and Kampung Melayu.
Tour participants will also visit a rubber plantation that once supplied Singapore, and possibly the region, with latex, and learn more about the different plants that played a major role in shaping this country’s culinary delights at the Ubin Fruit Orchard before ending the tour at Teck Seng’s Place – a restored Chinese kampung house.

For all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance.

Take a walk with us to experience Ubin's wonderful natural and cultural heritage. The 2.2km trail takes about 2 hours to complete. The tour will start at the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub and take you through the spice trees around Jelutong campsite, Butterfly Hill, Pekan Quarry, Sensory Trail Ponds, Kampong House, Old Bin Kiang School site, Toa Pek Kong Temple and end at the Wayang Stage. You will hear about the use of spices in cooking and the interesting history of the different sites.
Do you know what the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub was in the 1970s? When was the Toa Pek Kong Temple built? If you would like to know, then this is an excellent introduction to the heritage of the island.

For all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance.

18 Nov (Sat): Mangroves cum Coastal Clean-up at Ubin

Open to the Public - Registration Needed

Pulau Ubin is designated as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. In line with the Restore Ubin Mangroves (RUM) initiative, join us as we remove abandoned drift nets and marine debris that choke up Ubin’s coastline. This also prepares the selected sites for scientific surveys and RUM works; and ensures that our wildlife have the proper environment to thrive.

16 Nov (Thu): Colugo Watch at Bukit Batok Nature Park

Join Cicada Tree Eco Place to see the Colugo, one of the strangest animals of our world. It is a gliding mammal. It has a skin membrane stretching from its neck to its webbed fingers, to its webbed toes, and to the tip of its long tail. As you can imagine, when gliding it looks like an opened umbrella in the air! It also has an adorable face, with a pink nose and ears, and huge eyes to help it see in the dark.
Singapore is one of the very few places in the world that you can easily see a colugo on any night that you go looking for it. A population lives in this mature park and we should be able to find some. Once our colugos have all glided away into the forest, we will walk the paths here to look for other critters of the night, such as owls, nightjars, bats, and a multitude of lovely creepy-crawlies.

Join the NUS Toddycats of Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum in discovering the forest! Learn about amazing plants and animals living in our backyard as part of the Love Our MacRitchie Forest movement.
Come join us and learn about the conservation issues surrounding the proposed Cross Island MRT Line (CRL) through the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

The forest trail at Venus Loop is a dirt path, which is relatively level and suitable for children and the elderly. Be prepared for some mud.

This guided walk is conducted by volunteers and is free-of-charge. Limited spaces available.

The Plant Group will explore the 1.5 km nature trail at the northern section of Chestnut Nature Park. What do carpenters and leaf-cutters have in common with bees? Come join us for this talk and the "Life Goes On..." photography exhibition for the latest buzz about bees. Check in to the bee hotel on display, and check out some bee specimens.

About the speaker: Zestin Soh, Manager (Community Parks) National Parks Board, graduated from Imperial College London, majoring in Ecology and Environmental Biology. With a fascination for bees, Zestin has been studying them, and learning interesting facts about the bees in Singapore.

The long-tailed macaques are the most conspicuous animals at Macritchie Reservoir Park. Although commonly seen, they are very misunderstood. Few seeing them realise anything about the social world these monkeys live in. They have kin networks, power struggles, friends, foes, and an otherwise complex social network. In many ways, they provide a mirror of our own sociality.
If you would like to learn more about your community and the interesting world of your neighbouring macaques at Macritchie, please join our free walk, led by experts from the Jane Goodall Institute Singapore.
