      24 May (Sat): Race Against Time – Science behind a Botanic Garden Tour

      Join this free one-hour tour by the Botanic Gardens staff to learn more about the Gardens’ research work.
      Come and explore the hub of the Gardens' research facilities at the Singapore Botanic Gardens to learn about botanical research. Find out about the urgency of plant exploration, collection and scientific documentation as species and habitats continue to be lost in the region. Visit the Orchid Micro-propagation and hybridisation display and find out how new hybrids are produced. You can also enter the restricted domain of the Herbarium and Library to learn about the valuable historical treasures they hold for science and posterity.

      24 May (Sat): Free Chek Jawa boardwalk tour with the Naked Hermit Crabs

      Celebrate Earth Day as the Naked Hermit Crabs introduce you to Chek Jawa without getting your feet wet. Even though we are not going on to the shore, there is still much to see and enjoy. There are monitor lizards, fiddler crabs, spiders, rare plants, wild boar, mudskippers and lots of fruit trees. If we are lucky, we might even spot the Oriental Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Sea Eagle and the giant Atlas Moth.

      17 May (Sat): Kayaking to St John’s Island and Pulau Tekukor

      Open to the Public - Nature Society (Singapore) members Given Priority - Registration Needed

      This is a sea kayaking trip to two interesting Southern Islands Pulau Tekukor and St John’s Island. Pulau Tekukor used to be a military island. Although we cannot land, we will paddle past closely. St John’s Island was once the world's largest quarantine centre. It is now an oasis of mature trees, abandoned houses, holiday camps and sandy beaches. We will get to enjoy its fabulous sun, sand and sea.

      Experience Ubin's wonderful nature through your senses along our Sensory Trail.
      This is an excellent introduction to the rustic and natural character of the island. You will be able to touch, see or smell fruit trees, spices and herbs for cooking, plants used in traditional medicine and native plants of the mangrove forest.

      Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the largest surviving primary rainforest in Singapore. Come and join us on a fascinating journey of discovery to learn more about the natural wonders of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and why we should protect and conserve its complex ecosystem and diversity.

      This free guided walk will introduce you to the common native flora and fauna found in the primary rainforest.

      This guided walk is suitable for families with children 9 and above, and groups of not more than 5. Along a slightly undulating natural path, the trail is not accessible to prams and wheelchairs.

      This workshop is organised with The Green Beans of SOTA, a student interest group that aims to encourage youths to explore and develop a love for our own local, natural green spaces.

      SPEAKERS 

      Ria Tan is just an ordinary person who is passionate about Singapore's marine life. She was involved in setting up the guiding system at Chek Jawa and Pulau Semakau and currently volunteers as a nature guide with the Naked Hermit Crabs. Working closely with NParks, she also volunteers with TeamSeagrass and the Mega Marine Survey. She regularly monitors about 40 seashore locations in Singapore and has been doing so for the past 10 years. She blogs at Wild Shores of Singapore and runs the Wildsingapore series of websites. She is co-author of the Chek Jawa Guidebook, Southern Shores of Singapore guidesheet and Wild Singapore coffee table book, and is currently working on new marine nature guidebooks for Singapore.

      Dr Vilma D’Rozario is Associate Professor of Psychological Studies at the National Institute of Education, and has made significant contributions in the fields of service learning, counselling and guidance. She is also the co-founder of Cicada Tree Eco-Place, a non-profit organisation that runs nature lessons for kids and their families, schools and corporations, with the aim of creating a better appreciation for Singapore’s natural heritage and inspiring stewardship of our precious biodiversity. She is also an active advocate for our wild habitats and is involved in the Love Our MacRitchie Forest campaign.

      12-17 May: Traditional Wayang at Pulau Ubin with free boat ride

      Come to Pulau Ubin to enjoy authentic traditional wayang in celebration of Tua Pek Kong's birthday!
      Ubin jetty is usually colourfully decorated for the celebrations!

      There will be a free nightly wayang show (12-17 May) and finale geitai show (17 May). This is NOT a special performance put up for the public, but a part of the way of life of the residents of Ubin.

      Take a free bumboat to Pulau Ubin and enjoy what may be the last of these performances.

      10 May (Sat): Trees For Life Photography Workshop

      Do you have a tree that’s special to you? One that you hold close to your heart or has been there during the special moments of your life? Capture your special tree in a photograph, together with the people or objects that are meaningful to you, and share your story with us in the NParks “Trees For Life” photography competition. Throughout this walking trail, our guides will share more about tree appreciation and point out the types of trees that would make good photography subjects. At the end of this session, you will submit your favourite photographs as entries in the NParks “Trees For Life” competition.
      This is an estimated 2 hours trail targeted at children and youths from students from preschool to tertiary level only. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear comfortable attire and walking shoes. Do remember to bring your camera, umbrella and some drinks.

      The Learning Journey is limited to 25 participants. Registration is required via the NLB website.

      10 May (Sat): Nature Keeper Programme

      Designed to stimulate the interest of the young and inculcate in them an appreciation of our forests, the programme will be carried out at Dairy Farm Nature Park. The programme aims to nurture young volunteers in protecting our natural heritage in the longer term.
      Children will learn more about the fun facts of the forests in Singapore and have the opportunity to interact with nature. As part of the programme, they will also be introduced to “The Green Factory” and understand how forest products are incorporated into our daily life. There will also be a guided walk at Wallace Trail and an art-and-craft session.

      Suitable for children 7 - 10 years old.

      The long-tailed macaques at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve are commonly seen, but often misunderstood. Few know about the social world of these monkeys. They have family members, power struggles, friends, foes, and a complex social network. In many ways, they mirror our own social life!
      If you would like to learn more about your community and the interesting world of your neighbouring macaques at Bukit Timah, please join our walk, led by experts in these unique creatures.

      9 May (Fri): Talk on "The Smooth-coated Otter in Singapore - Restoration, Recovery and Residence"

      Once thought to be locally extinct from the 1960s, the smooth-coated otter has since made a successful resurgence across the northen shores of Singapore that has taken place since the late 1990s till now. The otters have returned presumably from Johor to Singapore's coastlines and as their range expands with increasing populations, they are seeking out new areas.
       Join Meryl as she talks about the otters' return, increasing presence and habitats along our coastlines and waterways. She will discuss how Singapore can play the role of refugia for this species to promote their continued presence.

      A tip for a long-weekend trip
      Our wild places and parks can get VERY crowded on long weekends. The best way to avoid the crowds is to arrive early in the morning and leave early. Our wildlife is generally more active in the morning too! 

      4 May (Sun): Horseshoe Crab Rescue and Research

      Join us for this monthly mission to rescue and study the Mangrove Horseshoe Crab (HSC). Bring along a cap, shoes/booties, sunblock, repellent, cutter for HSC rescue and a camera. Washing facilities available.

      A free guided tour of the Healing Garden which showcases over 400 varieties of plants used medicinally.
      It is laid out thematically relating to component parts of the body such as head, respiratory and reproductive systems. Spread over 2.5 hectares, this garden is designed as a tranquil retreat with medical plants traditionally used in Southeast Asia as the main focus.

      This walk is conducted every first Saturday of the month.

      1 May (Thu): Istana Open House

      The Istana grounds are open to the public in celebration of May Day. View the Istana gardens while a variety of performances on the grounds provide entertainment. You may also have the chance to have your photos taken with the President and First Lady when they come by to greet visitors.

      Selected function rooms with displays of gifts presented to the President and Prime Minister by foreign dignitaries can be viewed for a fee of $2. All proceeds from entrance fees and the sale of Istana souvenirs will be donated to charity.
      There will also be guided nature walks by volunteer guides trained by NParks who will share snippets of the Istana’s history and little-known facts of the resident flora and fauna. Highlights of the walk include plants which were a key part of the Istana’s history, such as the nutmeg at the Spice Terrace. Other examples of plants uncommon outside the Istana’s grounds are the Meninjau tree, Nibong palm and the fragrant Bread Flower climber.
