27 Apr (Mon): Public Seminar on “Status of Coral Reefs in Asia and the World"

Dr Wilkinson, an internationally recognised coral reef scientist responsible for coordinating the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network will discuss “Status of Coral Reefs in Asia and the World; the search for solutions to reef decline”.
Among his key points are that: Singapore is a bridge between the Indian and Pacific Oceans and can take a lead because of the particularly strong education, research and information technology capacity. But first people in Singapore must demonstrate that they are concerned about the environment, want to arrest climate change and sincerely protect their own coral reef resources.

Synopsis:
Coral reefs continue to be threatened by direct human pressures of pollution and over-fishing, but now the threat of climate change has being recognized as the major future threat to reefs around the world.

The report released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network and the International Coral Reef Initiative in late 2008, with more than 370 leading scientists and managers from 96 countries, reports that 19% of the world’s coral reefs have effectively been lost and another 35% are threatened with destruction in the next few decades; unless urgent action is taken to improve management and reduce threats.

The ‘Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2008’ report contains both good and bad news: there has been major recovery of reefs in the Indian Ocean, parts of Southeast Asia and western Pacific after climate change induced bleaching in 1998, especially on those reefs that were in protected areas.

The bad news was the damage caused by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and massive coral bleaching combined with hurricane damage that devastated large areas of Caribbean coral reefs in 2005 and 2006. There are also increasing human pressures including pollution, development, deforestation and overfishing in East Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, populated areas of the Pacific and Caribbean, and there has been a ‘outbreak’ of bomb and cyanide fishing in Asia and in Tanzania.

The saddest story is in Southeast Asia which has the richest coral reefs in the world as well as the greatest human threats to reefs. But also Asia has rapid growing economies that will demand greater environmental protection. Singapore is a bridge between the Indian and Pacific Oceans and can take a lead because of the particularly strong education, research and information technology capacity. But first people in Singapore must demonstrate that they are concerned about the environment, want to arrest climate change and sincerely protect their own coral reef resources.

About the Speaker:
Dr Wilkinson an internationally recognised coral reef scientist responsible for coordinating the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), which is active in more than 80 countries. Funding from the Governments of the USA and Australia, as well as Japan, France and international NGOs supports the GCRMN, which publishes the "Status of Coral Reefs of the World" reports in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008 with special reports on the tsunami and coral bleaching damage to coral reefs. Among his diverse roles, Dr Wilkinson's research interests cover a wide range of topics, including microbiology, ecology of sponges and the implications of climate change to coral reefs.

24 Apr (Fri): 'Earth Day' talk by Dr Shawn Lum

Earth Day: How far have we come, and what challenges remain?

Dr Shawn Lum from the National Institute of Education and Nature Society (Singapore) gives this talk.

The late 1960s was a time when many social, political, environmental and other issues took on a dynamism and immediacy few had seen before (or since). It was this milleu that the idea for the first Earth day was mooted 40 years ago. This talk will briefly review the history and inspiration behind Earth Day, and will look at the environmental concerns of the 1960s and 70s with those of today. How successful have be been at both a local and global level at addressing the issues first raised 40 years ago? What new issues have gained prominence and how are we dealing with them? We will also pay special attention to Southeast Asia to see if there are any unique environmental threats facing the region, to celebrate local environmental triumphs both big and small, and to make some guesses as to what future Earth Days will hold in store for us.

19 Apr (Sun): "The 11th Hour" free screening at Botanic Gardens

Advance Screening of the 11th Hour by HBO and Singapore Botanic Gardens

Humankind's 11th hour is here: the last moment when we can change course and stop our rush toward global ecological collapse. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio produces and narrates this urgent and transformational look at where we've been, where we're going and - most important - how we can change.
Thinkers from Mikhail Gorbachev to Stephen Hawking to sustainable-design expert William McDonough and dozens more reveal the current, critical state of life on planet earth. Astonishing images of floods, fires, hurricanes, collapsing ice cliffs and growing mountains of waste juxtaposed with images of a sustainable future urge us to take action. Will we employ exciting new technologies and change our behavior to save our planets? The crisis is now; but we do have the solutions to save this unique blue planet for future generations.

It's our generation that gets to change the world... forever!

Admission is free, on a first-come-first-served basis.

18 Apr (Sat): Jemput! Rediscovering Plants in Malay Cuisine & Culture

Come and join us on our free guided walks as part of Jemput! Rediscovering Plants in Malay Cuisine & Culture. Fort Canning Park presents a themed-display in the park that focuses on the second largest ethnic group in Singapore, the Malays, from March to April 09. There will be two public workshops, and free guided walks in Fort Canning Park’s Spice Garden which provide a chance for participants to get up close and personal to plants which play an important role in both cuisine and culture of the Malays.

The early Malays who led a semi-nomadic way of life have garnered a wealth of information extracted from nature and the environment that surrounds them. These old wisdom were usually passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth and have been known to be laced with superstitions and sometimes contain very little logic and science. Nevertheless, these beliefs and practices have assimilated in the Malay culture and traditions and some practiced till this very day.

Jemput – a term often used to invite guests into their home, start of a meal or just about any activities. We welcome you to rediscover and sample the rich Malay culture. Your journey begins here.

The tour will lasts approximately 1½ hr and will introduce participants to plants commonly featured in Malay cuisine, tradition and ceremonies. Walk is moderately easy but will involve some climbing down and up steps and slope.

18 Apr (Sat): Library talk on "Showcasing Singapore's Dragonflies - Let the Dragons Fly!"

In Singapore, about 117 species of dragonfly has been recorded. However to most people in this highly urbanised city, dragonflies now exist only in our memories. Parents who used to live in kampongs will remember these colourful insects flying around ponds or streams and the fun they had trying to catch them. But dragonflies are still here, alive and well. And they are as beautiful and vivid as ever. Robin will share his dragonfly knowledge with the audience. He'll reveal the insect's intimate life history, showcase their vibrancy, where we can appreciate them and the simple things we can do to conserve our dragonflies.

Suitable for children age 5 to 12 years old

About the speaker, Mr Robin Ngiam. Robin is a Senior Project Officer in the National Biodiversity Centre in NParks. He is currently working on a dragonfly project. The main aim of his work is to document the dragonflies found in our parks and gardens. He is also aiding park managers in enhancing the ponds to attract more dragonflies; leading NParks staff in doing dragonfly surveys; and educating anyone who is interested to know more of these beautiful insects. He also works closely with colleagues from the nature reserves to survey rare dragonfly species found only in Singapore's remaining forests.

18 Apr (Sat): "When sharks die, the oceans die" ACRES at Speakers' Corner

Join ACRES at the first ever gathering of animal lovers at Speakers' Corner!

From email from Louis Ng, ACRES dated 8 Apr 09

Why should you care that over one million sharks were killed last year alone for the sake of shark fin soup?

Because this is not just about sharks.

When sharks die, the oceans die.

Latest research shows that when sharks are removed from the ecosystem, the entire marine food chain starts to collapse, and takes with it the food resources on which large populations of humans depend.

It all happens under the surface and out of sight, so we never get to see it. But now we can.

A ‘first-of-its-kind’ ACRES Event.

Join ACRES for a revealing display of the devastating domino effect caused by the disappearance of sharks.

This event to launch ACRES’ campaign against shark fin soup will be held at Hong Lim Park (Speaker’s Corner) on 18 April 2009 from 2pm to 4pm.

It is a unique opportunity for animal lovers to show their support for the thousands of creatures threatened by the soup.

Why you need to be there.

If you have ever eaten shark fin, please come and discover why the practice is so destructive.

If you love nature and the earth, please come learn about this catastrophe under the sea.

Even if you couldn’t care less about sharks or nature, please come find out how this will change your life. Because like it or not, all of us are eventually going to pay the price for Asia’s ravenous indulgence in this soup.

4 Apr (Sat): Jemput!
