5 Jun (Thu): Talk on "Sustainable Development and the Environment: Is there a place for Nature?"

The environment has gone from being the domain of an active but otherwise small part of our community, to an issue that regularly graces the news headlines and is central to everything from business models to development plans and policies. To what extent has an appreciation and an understanding of biodiversity conservation kept with this exponential growth in environmental awareness? This talk will look at challenges facing the conservation of biodiversity in light of typical models of sustainable development and standard arguments put forth for conservation. What role can Singapore play in the bigger scheme of conservation-related things?

About the Speaker:
Shawn Lum is a lecturer at the National Institute of Education. While his training has been in plant ecology, he is also a proponent of environmental education and community-based conservation. A fair amount of his spare time is spent as a volunteer for the Nature Society (Singapore).
